Biography: "Carl Fullerton's interest in the art of makeup was piqued when he was a kid. For Fullerton, as it apparently was for just about everybody else now involved in fantasy films, this interest was kindled to a great extent by Famous Monsters, but perhaps more important to him than photographs of monsters were movies that featured less obvious makeup creations.

'What really amazed me,' says Fullerton, 'were the movies where just subtle makeup applications changed the actors' appearances. A good example in somewhat recent years was Dr. Strangelove in which Peter Sellers plays many different characters.'

Through an application to NBC-TV's makeup department, Fullerton met the veteran effects grandmaster, Dick Smith. Smith took him under his wing and gave him an apprenticeship, asking him to help with his first the movie, Altered States. He continued to progress, producing some excellent effects for movies such as The Hunger and Spasms.

As someone who has succeeded in entering the makeup business relatively recently, Fullerton has some interesting advice for young people who want to know how to get started in makeup. Rather than make the usual mention of Corson's Stage Makeup and other beginning makeup manuals, Fullerton says that, 'before they get going, my advice would be to study art in the classical sense.'

'Learn how to draw, learn how to sculpt, learn how to paint, so that you won't have to struggle with these techniques that you'll be forced to know; you have to be able to draw somewhat, and if you can't sculpt at all you're totally wrong for the field, and it's very helpful to know how to paint.'" - Fangoria #28 (July, 1983)

Update: Carl Fullerton has been very successful in the field of make-up and special effects, and he has been nominated twice for an Oscar - In 1985, for Best Achievement in Makeup for Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins and in 1993, for Best Achievement in Makeup for Philadelphia. He won a Saturn Award in 1992 for Excellence in Special Effects Make Up for his work on The Silence of the Lambs.
